The Laboratory of Environmental Cartography and Hydraulic and Geological Modelling is a research laboratory operating within the Department of Informatics, Modelling, Electronics and System Engineering (DIMES) of University of Calabria (southern Italy). The lab was established in 1991 and it is located on the fifth and the seventh floor of building 41/B


On January 2005, the CAMILab was accredited as Competency Centre of the Italian National Civil Protection (Prime Minister's Decree of 25th February 2004) and was confirmed in this role in 2007 and 2011.

The Lab is involved in several activities of Major Risks National Commitee, which is the connecting structure between the National Service of Civil Protection and the Scientific Community, and in various initiatives of the Civil Protection Department such as Io Non Rischio.

Since 2014 the CAMILab is a member of the ICL (International Consortium on Landslides), a scientific organization which is supported by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), WMO (World Meteorological Organization), FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations), UN/ISDR (United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction).


The dense network of the lab collaborations comprises diverse partnenrs such as Public Authorities as well as italian and international researc centres.

CAMILab pursues, within an integrated framework, the development of research, teaching and consulting activites, in the fields of competence. The Lab takes advantages of the wide rangeof basic and applied research findings and promotes the transfer of this knowledge to Public Authorities, policy makers and practitioners operating in the field of civil protection and services related to the following topics:

  • development of mathematical simulation models, at the slope and the basin scale, for the main phenomena involved in the study of hydrological cycle and mitigation of hydrological risk (heavy rainfall events, river floods, landslides, ...);
  • realization and management of systems for monitoring and control of environmental hazards;
  • production of thematic maps, databases and environmental information systems;
  • development of advanced training and lifelong learning courses.
